On Saturday night versus Chicago State University, WNMU could not repeat their previous night's strong second half three-shooting performance (61.5 percent versus the University of North Texas) to get a Division I opponent win. WNMU could only nail 28 percent from beyond the arc, losing to the Cougars 89-79.
The Mustangs were down by two, 8-6, five minutes into the game, but then the Cougars went on a 11-2 run in four minutes.
In the first half, Chicago State hit 7-of-15 three-point shots; whereas, WNMU hit only 2-of-9 shots from behind the arc. The Mustangs went into the locker room down by 13, 43-30.
The Cougars lengthened the lead to 23 points with just under six minutes left in the game. The Mustangs were able to chip away at the lead after converting 11-of-14 free throws, but there weren't enough chances from the field for the Mustangs to recover. The Cougars finished the game with a 10-point advantage.
JJ Galberth (El Paso, TX/Parkland High School) (El Paso, TX) led all players in scoring with 27 points. Galberth shot 61.5 percent from the field. Trey Clarkson (Tucson, AZ/Sal Pointe High School) (Tucson, AZ) tallied 14 points and five rebounds in his 36 minutes of play.
Chicago State's David Holston led the Cougars with 26 points. He also dished out six assists.
WNMU will enter the RMAC schedule 3-3. They will travel to Chadron State College and the University of Nebraska - Kearney next weekend.
